Martha Strickland, Featured Quilter
We are proud to present Martha Strickland of LaVale, MD as our 2017 Quilt Show featured quilter
Martha has a background in clothing construction. When she became acquainted with quilting in the mid-1970's, sewing pieces of fabrics following quilt design patterns was a natural for her. Martha was originally taught to quilt at the former fabric store 'Christmas Corner'. After hand sewing one piece for a tote bag, Martha knew that she preferred machine piecing over hand piecing. It is still her favorite part of quilting.
In 1984, Martha began teaching quilting at Allegany College of Maryland. To this day she has been an influential teacher, guiding both novice and experienced local quilters in their selection of sewing techniques, choice of fabrics, and the piecing of the quilt blocks into a finished quilt. Martha conducts bus trips to various fabric shops as part of her class agenda.
Martha has been an active member of the Schoolhouse Quilters Guild since the 1990's and served as its President from 2007-2008. She is currently the Treasurer for our SQG 2017 Quilt Show. Martha is also an active member of the Creative Needles Quilters and the American Quilting Society.
'Generosity' best describes one of Martha's many qualities. She has donated quilts to numerous fund raising events within the community. After learning about a prayer quilt ministry in Frostburg from one of her quilting students, Martha started a similar group at the United Methodist Church in LaVale. Their mission is to provide quilts to physically and mentally disabled individuals.
Martha enjoys attending various quilting exhibits in the surrounding area along with major shows such as the ones that are held in Paducah KY and as far away as Houston TX. She continues to attend classes conducted by well known quilters so she can share their knowledge of sewing with her class and friends.
During the Schoolhouse Quilters Guild 2017 Show, you will have the opportunity to view a number of quilts created by Martha's quilting class members. We have been blessed to have her as a member and could not wish for a better representative of our craft.
